MAGISTRATE'S COURT

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 23. (Before Mr J. S. Evans, S.M.) Margaret Josephine Sullivan was convicted and discharged on a charge of having been found in a state of helpless drunkenness. For drunkenness, Owen McAleavy and Thomas King were each fined 10s pr forty-eight hours’ imprisonment; Maiy Smith 30s, or three days; and Frank Arnold 40s, or seven days. A young man named Reginald Herbert Clark admitted a charge of having used threatening behaviour in Waterloo quay, whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned. Mr Kirkcaldio appeared for tho accused, who was fined 10s and 8s costs. It was pointed out that the man was under the influence of drink at the time, John Faithful was fined £3, or fourteen days, on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in that ho habitually consorted with reputed prostitutes. Mr IT. E. O’Leary appeared for the accused. Wm. Mackie, alias James Nugent, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on a charge of having assaulted Gustave Vaoklin. The assault, according to Chief-Detective B rob erg, took place in a boardinghouse in Willis street. The accused, backed up by several of his confreres, attacked the informant in a cowardly manner, finally kicking him in tho face.
