THE WATERSIDERS

MANY STILL SHUT OUT, About 160 old waterside workers signed on tho roll of the now union yesterday, and then enrolment ceased, as ft had been decided not to fill the union books with Lie names of now 'members when there arc now' more than sufficient men available for the ■work offering. Commencing at 9 o clock in tho morning, ox-strikers were being ■enrolled for over two hours in K shed. A queue was formed, and tho men were admitted to tho office by twos and threes. It is said that last week there were about 1450 members of the new union .available for work, but it is believed, in some quarters, that there were only •about 800 actually working. Some 300 or 400 who have been acting as seamen and firemen will be added to tho number of wharf labourers available for work. Scores of the hew wharf labourers are discontinuing ■work on tho water front daily. The ■majority of os-strikers who found work vestorday were engaged on the Home Miners or by tho Harbour Board. . Tho preference rule is being strictly adhered to. As occasion demands, more of the old watersidors will be enrolled with tho now union; but at present tho demand for labour is being mot first by those now working and Afterwards by ex-strikers. There will bo work for a considerable number of men this afternoon, ■when tho Home liner Tainui is expected to arrive from London with a largo ■cargo. Tho vessel, after being subjected to medical inspection in tho ■stream, will berth at No. I. south (outer tee), Queen’s wharf.
