It is reported that a largo party of natives was surrounded by lava, ine relatives were unable to reach them, ami saw them slowly roasting to dentil. Tho captain of tho Pacifiquc describes tho eruption as magnificent, but detonations occurred, and great red-hot boulders were thrown into tho sea, causing tho water to rise in columns scores of feet high. The air was filled with choking dust, and the -"whole island was lit by an unearthly light.
