SENTENCE COMMUTED
SERVITUDE INSTEAD OF DEATH. By Telegraph—Preas Association— Copyright (Received October 22, 9.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 22. In the case of William Parker, who was sentenced to death on August 19th, tho sentence has been commuted to ten years’ penal servitude. [A. message published on August 18th said: —Tho trial of William Parker, a surveyor, on a charge of wounding James Thomas Knox, Acting-Town Clerk of Footscray, with intent to murder, has commenced. Counsel for the defence pleaded temporary insanity. Parker’s brother, when twentythree years of age, was committed to an asylum, whore he had remained ever since. Tho accused had been greatly worried on the day of the snooting. Parker had been acting as engineer to the Footscray Municipal Council. The relations between him and Knox had been strained for some time and a standup fight Jjad previously occurred. Knox was shot in four places. 1
