(Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) Georgo Lucas, charged with drunkenness, was remanded until October x9ch tor curative treatment. Inspector Hendrey stated that the man was in a state bordering on delirium tremens. Andrew Larsen was fined 20s, or threo days’ imprisonment, for drunkenness, and for a similar offence Henry Greenfield was fined 40s, or seven days. Henry Andrus was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order in respect of his wife and two children. The arrears amounted to £l4. Thomas Reeves, a prohibited person, with seven previous convictions for drunkenness during the past six months, pleaded not guilty to charges of insobriety, using obscene language, and resisting a police constable in the execution of his duty. A constable stated that he arrested the accused in Willis street at 9 o’clock on Tuesday night in a condition of drunkenness. Ho attempted to strike witness, chose hat was knocked off, but after a struggle witness handcuffed the man, and with the aid of another constable took him to the police station. On the way there he made use of the obscene language. The accused said that he had been violently thrown about and exhibited a shirt torn open at the neck in evidence. “If you only look at my neck you will seo the miserable way I was treated,” he complained. His Worship remarked that if that were tho case accused could make a charge against the constable for assault. Ho imposed a fine of £3, or fourteen days, on tho second charge, and one of 40s, or seven days, on the third. For drunkenness accused was convicted and discharged. Frank Maidment was fined 40s and ■ls costs, or fourteen days, for attempting to steal the sum of 18s in money, the property of Yeo Wah. Inspector Hendrey stated that the man entered the Chinaman’s shop, and, during the temporary absence of the proprietor, opened the till, and was in the act of taking tho money out when the Chinaman re-entered the shop. The accused was a man who did no work and who thieved when he could. W'ong Joe pleaded guilty to being the occupier of a common gaminghouse at 131 a, Taranaki street, and was fined £2O, plus £1 8s costs, with the option of six weeks’ imprisonment. He stated that he had no goods on which tho police could distrain. John David Speight was fined 40s, or fourteen days, for stealing a macintosh coat, valued at 20s, the property of some person unknown. For stealing an overcoat, valued at 10s, the property of John McDonald, a similar penalty was imposed. For insobriety, he was convicted and discharged.
