PRISONER KILLED

WHILE WORKING IN LYTTELTON ' GAOL. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, October 22. Shortly before 2.30 tins afternoon a serious accident occurred at tho Lyttelton gaol. A number of prisoners were engaged in lifting a ladder over a gate which gives access to the prison. A prisoner, Richard Raymond, was on tho inside of the entrance assisting to got the ladder into position by means of a rope. The ladder dislodged a heavy piece of masonry, which fell a distance of about 20ft, striking Raymond on tho head. Dr Newell was quickly in attendance, and after rendering first aid ordered tho man’s removal to tbo casualty ward. The man’s skull was fractured, and be died at 10.30 to-night.
