TRENTHAM RACES TO-DAY

REVIEW OF THE CANDIDATES. The Wellington winter meeting opens at Trentham to-day,'when the Steeplechase will be decided. Seventeen still remain in this event, and among the number are some of the best crosscountry horses in the Dominion. Most of the competitors have earned winning brackets this season. Nothing looks nor is going bettor than Hoanga. The Spaniard is also likely to have many admirers, especially as ho'has Julian in the saddle. I am inclined to believe the paco set over this small country, will cause his downfall, and I would much prefer his chances at Riccarton. where the fences are bigr ger. Glenmore has plenty to lumber, but he is a perfect jrimper. Old Waif tarero has been pleasing onlookers in his work of lato. Bismarck is a really good stayer, and may bo knocking at the door before it is nil over.

The Parliamentary Handicap will next arrest attention. Seventeen have stood their ground and a good race should be the result. On Auckland form Hnskavno should run Well forward but Sir Knox and Ceylon, which

have been doing good work on the Lacks, need to be respected. Kilrain will have the services of W. Young, who is particularly smart at the barrier. The Winter Hurdles so far attracts a field of fourteen, but I expect the pen will be drawn through a couple of names. The Hover was responsible fur the best gallop of the morning on Saturday, when ho rather eas.ly defeated I’hroso. Aberbrothock is a very likely sort, while the recent performances of Peary and Watchchain are stm fresh in the memory of turfites. Red Earl’s connections expect him to put up a good fihht. Mummer will be fancied lor the opening on the strength of his wins at Gisborne, but Turna has been responsible for some good work. Still the last furlong may find him out, as he is better suited to six furlongs. Theodore has also improved, and, if himself again, should give a good account of himself. Black Lupin has some good performances to his credit, and may be expected to give a good showing. The Trial Plate seems to possess some very good material, and a capital race should be witnessed. The Hon. J. D. Ormond will be represented by Lyrique, which showed considerable pace as a two-year-old, but unfortunately went wrong. Kew has also shown good form..and is evidently a fair sort. Sir Moseley (half-brother to Theodore) has a lot of pace, and was . unlucky at Hastings when beaten after getting a had passage throughout the journey. Balada, George, and Adelecia have all good credentials, and should run well forward.
