TUESDAY. JULY 15. (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) Edward Cassidy and John Gibbons were fined 10s each for drunkenness. May Gibbons was charged with escaping from a Salvation Army Home. Inspector Hendro.v stated that this was the second tune she had escaped from the homo. _ Defendant: May I say a word ? We get up at 6 a.m., and at half-past six we are told to go to work, and thenTho magistrate: I don’t want to hear this eternal argument. . - Defendant: Half the girls are imbeciles. and The magistrate: Two months hard labour. . „ , AJoIf Olesohowskv and Robert Murray were each fined 10s or seven days for threatening behaviour. Defendants had a stand-up fight opposite the Terminus Hotel. Patrick Ryan wt£s charged with steal, ing one overcoat, value £1 10s, the property of Joseph Bentley. He was further charged with stealing an overcost value £1 10s. the property of Fanny WhitaKer. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Deteotive Mason stated that in reply to him accused said that he had never sold an overcoat, as he had none to sell. At Mount Cook police station he was failed to be identified in one case. When he was shown another coat he said. “Yes.” I sold that- It is my own property-’' He was then confronted with the faci that ho had already stated he never had sold an overcoat.

Oscar Neilson was ordered to pay the Phoneix Aerated Water Co., £39 16s, by July 29tH, in default one month’s imprisonment. Tai Hekcta was ordered to pay Herbert Price £ls 19s 4d by- July 29th, or undergo fourteen days’ imprisonment. J. D. Cruickshank was ordered to pay J. Beveridge £4 16s 6d before July 29th, or spend seven days in prison.

CLAIM BY STATE GUARANTEED ADVANCES OFFICE.

The State Guaranteed Advances Office proceeded against Jas. H. Colpus, of Khandallah, claiming for taro instalments of £lO 10s each, due on a mortgage by the defendant to the State Guaranteed Advances, Workers Branch. - The defence was that the amount had been paid and the receipt lost. Mr H. H. Ostler prosecuted, and Mr T. Neave defended. The hearing of the case was adjourned. QUESTION OF CONTRACT. Dr McArthur gave reserved decision in the case Twist v. Geango, the facts of which were published last week. His Worship said he did not consider that the evidence disclosed a contract to employ plaintiff as clerk of works. He might have assumed such was the case, but there was the direct denial of defendant and his wife. Moreover, no tender was accepted under the plan and specification prepared by defendant. The plaintiff, however, did some work, which, although ultimately of no use to defendant, yet was accepted by him in calling the tenders, namely the specifications for which the plaintiff claimed £2 2s. Any other services might be covered by £1 Is. Judgment was entered for plaintiff for £3 3s.
