Mr Herbert Bley, conductor of the Wellington Professional Orchestra, has resigned on account of ill-health, _ and intends to give up all professional work for a period. The orchestra has accepted his resignation with regret, and is arranging to tender him a benefit concert at an early date. Mr T. A. Gates, of St. Stephen’s Anglican choir, Ashburton, claims that ho is probably the senior chorister of the Dominion. “I have been an active member of the church, choir continuously for the past forty-nine years,” said Mr Gates at a chair gathering last week, “and hope to continue so for some time to came.”

The Speaker of the House of Representatives yesterday read a letter he had received from Lady Guinness, who expressed her deep appreciation of the resolutions of appreciation of the services of Sir Arthur Guinness, and of sympathy, with her in the bereavement. lady Guinness tendered her heartfelt thanks for this mark of esteem for the memory of her late husband. On the motion of the Prime Minister, the Letter was recorded on the journals of the House. Mr John Garencieres Rose, whose death was announced yesterday, was the second son of Captain Henry Bose, for many years Wellington manager for the Now Zealand Shipping Company. He was educated at Wellington College, and then joined the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Ho was afterwards in the service of the National Eire and Marine Insurance Company in Wellington, - and was with that corporation until he went to the South African War as a member of one of the Now Zealand contingents. On , his return to the Dominion he joined the staff of Messrs W. and G. Turnbull and Co., and was attached to the firm’s insurance branch until his last illness as the local manager of the Guardian Company. For many year? he was connected with the D Battery, of which he was captain at the time of his death. Ho left a widow and one child.

Sedgwick, vicar of St. Luke’s, Christchurch, has been ol,ercd by Bishop Juuus, and has accepted, tho positions of diocesan missinner, organising secretary of the olrurch Miss .on Fund, and bishop’s chaplain, tho last-mentioned being purely an honorary office. Canon dedgwick’s principal work will be the -■-organising of the whole of the mission business. He is almost certain tc live in Christchurch, but will he attached to no parish. Canon Sedgwick has had an interesting career. He served as a naval chaplain, and saw active service in the Soudan with ths Gordon relief expedition. Returning England, he shortly afterwards; on --ount of ill-health, left for South Africa, serving in Bcchuanaland. He eturned to the Old Country one® more, and then, thirteen years ago, came out to New Zealand, taking charge of St. Luke’s ten years ago. He was recently appointed a canon of the Christchurch Cathedral.
