SOUTH AFRICAN ARMY
VOLUNTEERS TOTAL 65,000. CAPETOWN, February 24. General Beyers, South African Commandant, has announced that 65,000 men have volunteered for military service. Interviewed at Pietermaritzburg in January, General Beyers said that he was delighted at the practical effects of the Defence Act. The calculations were originally based on a total of 70,000 for the first year, but 25,000 was nearer the mark. Ho said he favoured sending, six officers to England bo qualify as air pilots, although aviation would be difficult on the high veldt.
