BOXING
WELLS BEATS MEHEGAN. LONDON, February 24. Matt Wells, the ex-lightweight champion of England, boat Mehegan, the Australian champion, on points, in a contest, ,at the National Sporting Club, of twenty rounds, for £IOO aside and a purse of £9OO, divided into £625 to the winner and £375 to tho loser. Wells scaled 9st 9ilh, and Mehegan 9st 7|lb. The former was favourite. Tho fight was very unsatisfactory up to tho fifteenth round, being mostly clinching. Wells scored freely at every chance, and frequently got in straight lefts In the open fighting to which Mehegan did not reply. In the sixteenth round Mehegan began to box, and, bemg tne stronger, scored freely up to the last round, when lie was unable to make up the points lost earlier. ‘He finished strong, while Wells was apparently tiring fast. The referee’s decision was cheered, though there was some dissent.
