FLOWER SHOW AT NEWTOWN

SPLENDID DISPLAY OF BLOOMS. The fourteenth annual exhibition of flowers, fruit, and vegetables under the auspices of St. Thomas’s Sunday school was opened at Newtown yesterday noon, apd will bo continued till this evening. A splendid display of seasonable blooms has been staged, especially in the gladioli, sweet pea. carnation, and rose sections, and competition is consequently much keener than is usually seen at shows of larger pretensions. In addition to the competitive entries some _ beautiful exhibits are shown on exhibition only. Prominent amongst these are rare sweet peas shown by Mr Holden, of Porirua; a beautiful display of gladioli from Messrs Jackson Bros., of Vogeitown; a great variety of carnations from Mr Pox’s garden at Newtown, and an assorted collection of cut flowers and foliage plants grown by Messrs Petterssou Bros. A special collection of vegetables is shown by Mr C. Hill, of Island Bay, which includes some remarkably fine specimens. At tho request of the Eev. W. Fancourt who presided, the show was officially opened by Mr W. H- P. Barber, who has always taken a special interest in its welfare. In his remarks Mr Barber congratulated the residents upon the very fine show, and enlarged upon attractiveness that is lent to homes by tho cultivation of the healthy and elevating pastime of gardening. Good business was done by the ladies In charge of the various stalls, which wore presided over hy Mesdames Grenside, Robins, and Miss Baliachy. afternoon tea; Mrs French and Miss Croll, lollie stall; the cut flowers and foliage plants were under the control of_ Mrs Richardson and Miss Allen respectively.
