HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The Hutt County Council met yesterday. Present: Councillors W. Galloway (chairman), W. J. Howell, W. Welch, J. Whiteman, T. Edwards and J. Wakebam. V Tho inspector of works reported that the reforming and metalling of Raumati road was progressing. satisfactorily. There had been 35 chains re-form-ed and metalled at a cost of £2 16s. The widening of Lowry Bay road at the eastern end from the Lower Hntt boundary was now in hand, and the work was being pushed on with all possible speed during the fine weather, a good staff of men .being employed- This was a very necessary work, and shouldbo accomplished as soon as possible. He recommended thaw the eastern span of the Silvoretrcam bridge near the railway bridge bo filled up and the timbers taken out. He called attention to the way the Hutt river was encroaching near Maori bank on section 124, block 2, Rimutaka, and said be thought tho owners of property m tbs vicinity should be asked to assist the council in preventing further damage. L, Riddifurd waited on the council regarding the continuation of construction work on the Orongorongo road. Tho council, it was stated, had £l5O set aside for this work, and Councillor Wakeham, member for tho riding, was instructed to see that it was spent to the best advantage. • The Auditor-General returned the council’s balance-sheet and stated ho took exception to interest paid. Tho Railway .Department informed the council of the conditions to do ot> served in tho taking of gravel from tho pit on the railway reserve. Mr J. Hughes asked the council to have the gates across tho Hutt-Waika-nae road at the Waik%nae end removed. This was agreed to. The chairman moved that the following motion passed on November 12th be rescinded: ‘‘That tho clerk should notify Charles Slight; of Paekakanki, and Mrs Annie Louisa Greig, of Foxton, to remove fences off roads fronting their sections in I’aekakariki township within thirty days from the late of the notice.” , , Considerable discussion followed, and tho chairman agreed to withdraw the motion, but the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Slight stating thi-t if ho did not com© bo terms the original motion would bo enforced.
