NEARING THE END
STAR OF CANADA. VESSEL SINKING DEEPER INTO THE PAPA. FBEBS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE, August 2. The advent of water in the stokehole [of the bear of Canada Jins naa a proijudiciai enect on mo underwriters' eflorts 'at Salvage, and the heavy setts which are running are expected to oven more soriouaiy injure the vessel,- which is straining badly. an omcial statement made to a reporter this, evening was to the effect that the future of tuo ship depends wholly upon a cable which is expected from llonm to-morrow. The report further states; that the weather experienced to-day waaj the worst since the vessel came nshuc. Seas were breaking right ovea; her and; up to the bridge. As soon as was practicable the tug Terewhiti was got alongside with very great difficulty; indeed, n portion of tho pumping plant and salvage gear was piaeed on board of her tor the purpose of safety, tho turbulent state of the-sea making it highly necessary that this should be taken. Later on, at low water, 'Nelson tiros.' lighter was towedd by the Hipi- into position,, and -further • pumps and gear were-placed on her. .
‘/A tegrettable feature of the whole thing," moomcer continued, "isthat the pressure of the water has now buckled the, bulkheads, and ..the water is finding its way into the stokehole, it being live or - in the forward- end., X'ne declivity of the chip' t which -is now sinking badly at the head, and burrowr ing into the papa) seems to bo bp the increase, and it is almost as if some great inhuman monster was .pulling, the stricken vetse! down by th© head. - She is unquestionably, sinking deeper info the' papa rock, but there, are still hopes ofi successfully snlvsging her.” This evening a neavy sea was still running, and the big steamer was swinging badly. Local - - seafaring men- are pessimistic as to the vessel's chances, and it is generally expected that salvage efforts' will bo finally abandoned so far as the underwriters are concerned tomprrow, and that the offering of the ship as she lies by auction will follow in the course of-a day or two."
