DEATH OF THE MIKADO
MOTION OF CONDOLENCE IN HOUSE OF COMMONS.
LONDON, July 31. _ Tho Prime Minister, Mr Asquith, in the House of Commons, moved a motion of condolence with the people of Japan on the death of the Emperor Mutsu-hito. He emphasised the remarkable changes that had taken place during the reign. The alliance with Britain, he said, rested on a firm and enduring foundation. Tho leader of the Opposition, Mf Bonar Law, seconded the motion, whic. was carried unanimously. (Received August 2, 0.35 a.m.) LONDON, August 1. In the House of Lords yesterday. In tho presence of the Japanese Ambassador, Loras Chew and Lansdowne paid grateful tributes to the Mikado. CALCUTTA, July 31. The Government offices have been closed in India out of respect to the memory of the late Emperor of Japan. The City Council last evening passed a motion of condolence, to bo conveyed to the Japanese Consul in ■Wellington, with the people of Japan In the loss the nation has suffered by the death of the Emperor Hutsu-hlto.
