FILLING A GAP.
SHORTHANDED STEAMER TRANSFER LANDS AN OFFICER IN TROUBLE. ”EES3 ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, August 1. Recently when the Vancouver steamer Mamma was Auckland-bound a Vancouver eeaman deserted. An officer of the Union Steam Ship Company persuaded a steward on the Maheno to act on the Marama for the trip, with the promise that he would be returned to his old berth on the Maheno later. The captain of the Maheno was not consulted. For this action, Mr Hartley, the officer who induced the man to leave, was to-day prosecuted by the Superintendent of Marine on a charge of bavins persuaded a seaman not to proceed to sea in his ship. The facta were admitted. Mr Cutten, S.M„ decided against the defendant. Ho said the Act of 1877 permitted owners to transfer men from one ship to another, but there was no such provision In the present Act. The point is that the captain’s permission was not obtained and the man did not receive his discharge. Defendant would not ha fined. He would bo convicted and ordered to pay the costs.
