UNSIGHTLY HOARDINGS
Two remits at the Municipal Conference yesterday had an important aspect from the point of view of town planning and beautification. Mr Gleeaon (Auckland) moved; "That as tha existing legislation relating to hoard, lags and the pubUo display within view of passengers on highways of advertisements is unsatisfactory, and falls to deal affectively with existing hoardings, fresh legislation be enacted giving the council (nil power to license and otherwise control all hoardings existing or future, and gene rally to control under license or otherwise the exhibition of advertisements on board, ings,- .walls, places and buUdlnga visible from streets." The remit was seconded by Mr E. Fletcher and carried unanimously. It was considered an important step in the direction of town planning. Another motion by Mr M. J. Millar (Lyttelton) was that local authorities be empowered to compel removal of usolees and unsightly fences, buildings, hoardings, etc. His town, be said, had been much afflicted with these ugly eyesores; many of those things were owned by absentees wjho cared nothing about the progress of the town. The motion was carried without dissent.
