AGAINST AUSTRALIA. WET WICKET AND SMART FIELDING KEEP RUNS DOWN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, July 29. The sixth Test Match—-between England and Australia —was begun at Manchester to-day in boisterous weather and on the sofest of wickets. Thu teams are:

Australia—Jennings, Bardsley, Macartney, Gregory, Mayno, Matthews. Whitty, Hazlitt, Emory, (Jarkcek, and Kelleway. England—Fry, Hobbs, Rhodes, Spooner, Woolley, Hearne (J. . W.). Foster, Haigh, Hitch, Smith, and Hayes. The attendance numbered 6000, of whom 4407 paid for admission. Play was not started until 2.45 o’clock.

Fry won the toss and batted, sending in Hobbs and Rhodes. Hazlitt and Whitty bowled. The ball became greasy, and the bowlers requistioned sawdust.

At 72 Matthews had replaced Whitty, and Fry got two 4’s off one over from Kelleway, and reached double figures in fifty minutes. He got 19, and was then caught by McLaren at long-off off Matthews. Hearne followed, and when he had made a single was badly missed by Whitty at mid-on in Matthews next over. Hazlitt bowled in place of Kelleway at 89. Hearne kept up his wioket while Rhodes scored. The century was hoisted after 125 minutes’ batting. Rhodes, who was batting more freely, had got 53 in ,130 minutes.

Emery replaced Matthews afc 110. Rhodes .was almost run out on two occasions, thanks to smart returns I;. Bardsley and Matthews. After being in fifty minutes for 9, Hearne was “yorked” by Hazlitt. Rhodes was now 75. The Yorkahireman was playing enterprising cricket, and late cutting excellently. Woolley filled the , vacancy. After 165 minutes’ play 150 was posted. Whitty replaced Emery at 154, and got Woolley caught at fine leg for 13. Poster filled the vacancy. Matthews relieved Whitty at 173, and caught the newcomer off his own bowling. Poster, who also had made 13, was nearly caught by Whitty at raid-on before he had scored. Rhodes’s score was now 88. He was playing very cautiously. With Smith he played out time.
