NOTES AND COMMENTS

At last a genuine favorite has bcenfonr.il for the Melbourne Cup. It is Bobadea. who has been backed to win a hatful oi money. Nearly £zo,ooo was got about him locally (says a Sydney writer;, and he soon dethroned Trafalgar from his position ai the head of the list. Bobadea. whose weight is 7.12, is owned by “Mr K. 8. McLeod, - ' and in the -same stable as The Parisian.

Though the report of tho Totalisator Commission is against the introduction of the machine. Mr 11. Levien by no means regards that fact as disposing of all chance of tho legalisation of tho totalisator in this State (says the “hydnov Sunday Times '). When Parliament reassembles he intends moving the re-introduction of the Bill, with some important amendments, one ol which provides for the abolition of the bookmaker. .Some members of the Commission inferred that if it had been a of “totalisator or bookmaker/' and not “totalisator with bookmaker/’ they would have been found on the side of the machine, and now Mr Levien intends ascertaining whether that ia the general feeling of t/io House.

When the cable announced that Mr S. Hordern had purchased Bronzino, surprise was expressed that he was able to get so good a horse at this stage of the season, it transpires, however, that Bronzino broke down badly while training for ascov Gold Cup. and was not expected to stand another preparation. It is clear, therefore, that ho was purchased for stud purposes.

Although the Caulfield Cup is to come under notice before, tho Me*bourne Cup, the last-named race is beginning to attract some attention, and in connection with the great Fiemington handicap, Cauoiua and Artesian are two horsea much talked aoout from a wagering aspect, uadonia, who is now being trained by U. O Rourke, at Victoria Park, in New boutc W ales, is reported to be doing particularly well, and to have mended nis maniwu considerably. Last autumn tno son oi Prudent L.ing developed Uemper in hie races, and, u he does not acquire tnc naoit again, n© may have to be reckoned with, tor no is a genuine stayer, aim nicejy handicapped. A meet of the Mauawatu Hunt will take place -at the Tuita Hotel next Saturday, in© throw-oif will bo at 6 o’clock. CfIHiSTCH U ROH NOTES

SPECIAL TO THE "TIIIES.” „ , CHHISTCHUHCH, July 30. Continuance (uui. Paisano arrived during the weea. llotu are looking very nice ana appear to have done exceptionally well. Tno lonner is greatly tanciea lor tlio Graua National Hteopiocliase, and even with the steadier oi 12.3 he has. come in lor a lot of support. Yesterday Continuance was given a round over tne (steeplechase lenccs, and negotiated the obstacles iu faultless style. The same cannoj do said of his companion. Tui Oakobau, who lost a lot of ground at each of his jumps and ran oif at the first fence of tho double in front ot the grandstand. Tho uisplay given by Continuance was a very pleasing one. Tno bold, fearless manner in which he flew each fence proved him to be a proficient steeplechaser. It has been decided to abandon the North Canterbury Jockey Club's sports meeting which was postponed on Saturday on account ot the bad weather. The Advance gelding Prosper, one of tho favourites for tne Winter Cup, has created a favourable impression since his arrival at Biccarton.

H. Thomson has returned Faanakyle to her owner, and it is understood the Clanranald marc will bo treated tb a lengthy spell.

Tikitere, who met with an injury some time ago and was subsequently placed in slings, is progressing favourably at D. Roberta's, stables at Rlccarton, and will probably be well enough to leave her box one day this week. It is practically certain that she will never race again, but she should be very useful as a brood mare. Tho training tracks at Kiccarton arc in a very bad state as a result of the wot weather lately experienced. Last week the outside of the course proper was thrown open, and a certain amount of useful work was got through, but r^.'--to the present none of tho.horses have been fullv extended. Sir George Clifford has sold the filly Ancilla, by Treadmill—Chryseis, to an Oamaru sportsman, who intends retiring her to the stud.

Mumura appears to be very well at present* and D. Roberta should have the St. Ambrose horse very fit by the time the Winter Cup comes round, as with the majority of winter-meeting horses Mumura baa not been extended, and when the weather moderates wo will have a much better idea of his capabilities. * Master Paul and White Cockade appeared to have suffered no ill-effects as a. result of their efforts at the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. Both apnea r to be in -the very boat health. White Cockado is evidently very fit. Master Paul is bright and fresh, but neither of R. Longley’s charges has been sent over the hurdles einco the Wellington meeting. . ■

Tannhausor is building un in good style, and annears to have completely recovered from his ailment which necessitated a spell. Tho Martian colt is a pood doer, and McGrath is very fortunate in having been able to get him in his present condition in so short a time.

The two Southland representatives. The Gunner and Te Tua, were companions in a schooling essay over the big country, and both got round safely. Tho latter, a grey gelding, fell in both the steeplechase events at the Dunedin winter meeting. He has the reputation of being a* good fencer, but his efforts at Kiccarton eo far would not gain him many friends. MANAWATU HUNT CLUB.
