FKOII ORB OWN COBBE3PONDBNT. July 30. Tho Otaki Native College resumed duties yesterday mornmg, tutor a mould's vaear tion. The principal (Rev. Mr Blathwyte) spent his holiday In Auckland, -while his assistant (Mr D. Armitago) went to Nelson. During last week Mr J. Robertson, M.P. for Otaki, with Mr W. J. Howell, tho Whareroa representative of the Unit County Counoil mode a journed ncroea from Waikauae to the Eutt, via Bexko raugi, for the purposes of inspecting the road, with a view of obtaining necessary grants for needed work from the Government, and also to consider the advisability of preserving much, of the native hush for scenic purposes. Messrs Robertson and Howell left Roiklorangi on foot, walked to Akatarawa, and then drove into tbs Eutt. Heavy rain made the Journey an unpleasant one, and In places the track was In a very bad state. As a result of the trip the member for the district is firmly convinced that the lovely native bush should be preserved, while ho hopes to secure a Government grant for the unfinished part of the road. Mr Robertson left Otaki yesterday for Wellington. The subway to tho south of Manakau Is nearing completion, and when In use will prove of great advantage to those who have occasion to cross the railway. It is understood that the public crossing at the station will he allowed to remain open for all that time. The Ngatlawa Defence Rifle Club fired for Mr E. Brown’s trophy during the week, the scores also counting for tho championship belt. President G. A. Monk topped tho, score with 64. Rifleman Carter making 62. Rifleman F. H. Monk 59, and Rifleman H. W. Bear 58. Tho president Is leading for the belt. Riflemen P. E. Monk, J. Stubhlngs, and W. D. Bennett being next in order. An engineer from the Telegraph Department has been on a visit to Heikiorangi for tho purpose of making an estimate as to the cost of initiating the rural telephone system.
