The Mackelvio trustees have received advice that Mr Marcus Stone, R.A.* has been successful in securing for them an important historical picture, “Victorious, 11 by Sir James D. Linton, which will be forwarded at once. Another valuable addition which has bceu made to the city gallery has been scoured from a grant made by the Government to the Auckland Art Society for the purchase of pictures. This is a second _ work by John Gully, the subject being “Dusky Sound,” one of the most picturesque of the Otago west coast sounds. INVITED TO LOCATE WATER. AUCKLAND, July 30. The Rev. Mr Mason, wlio established a reputation as a water diviner, has accepted an invitation from planters in Honolulu to make a trip round the world with his wife, during which they will be the guea:s of the planters of Honolulu. Mr Mason will endeavour to locate water for them. TERRITORIALS IN COURT. BLENHEIM, July 30. • A batch of seven Territorials was before the court to-day for failing to attend camp. One produced a medical certificate, and was discharged. Five were fined 10s, and 7s costs, and one 5s with no costs. Six other informations were mentioned, but service was not proved. One excuse for not attending was that defendant had lost his horse and could not get a substitute. Another said ho was twenty miles away, packing in a back-country, and alleged that he had received no notice to attend camp.

WAIROA’S FAT STOCK TRADE. WAIROA, July 30. The export of fat stock, from Wajroa for the season just ended was as follows: —Southwards 106,364 sheen. Of this total 16,541 came from Gisborne, and about 3000 from Napier way, loav. ing 86,813 in favour of Wairoa county. In addition about 10,000 left horn northwards, bringing Wniroa’s export of fats up to 96,813. besides 5014 cattle, which passed through Mohaka. of which-3138 came from Gisborne district.

MAGGOT-INFECTED FRUIT. AUCKLAND, July 30. Of the shipment of oranges which arrived from Rarotonga by the Talune on Friday last no less than 400 cases were condemned by the authorities and ordered to be burned. Tho reason for this step was the fact that the 400 cases mentioned were badly infected with fruit maggot; 250 cases have already been taken to the destructor to be burned, and the remainder of the cases will be taken there to-day. This fruit is' the first to be condemned this season. CONTRACTORS COMPLAIN. TIMARU, July 30. Representatives of the builders and road contractors met - the Borough Council to-night to protest against tho railway authorities closing two railway crossings giving access to the beach shingle at the most convenient points, and where the most suitable shingle for roads and building purposes is obtainable. Mr Craigie, M.P., is to be asked to see the Minister and get the embargo removed, and if unsuccessful a deputation of those interested to go to Wellington for the' purpose. Those concerned say if the rule is adhered to the cost to the town will be some thousands a year fop extra haulage.
