Mr Charles Stuart, of Judgeford, near Pahautanui, one of tho earliest pioneers of the Dominion, died on Saturday, aged eighty-six • years. He was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1826 and arrived with his .parents in Wellington in 1842. On tho ■ discovery of gold in Victoria, ho spent a few years on the goldfields, being present at the Eureka stockade incident. On Mr Stuart's return to New Zealand ho took part in tho Maori war. lie was subsequently engaged in surveying, one of the party being tho late Mr Burling, of Waikanae. After a few years' farming in the Rangitikei district, ho finally settled in Judgeford, where he had resided for tho past fifty-three years. Mr Stuart took an active interest in the welfare of the district. and hia kindly nature and cheerful disposition gained him many friends. His wife predeceased him by six mouths. Of a family of fourteen, three sons and six daughters survive him. His sons are—Mr Richard Stuart, of Peilding; Mr David, of Pahautanui, and Mr Charles, of Lyell. The daughters are— Mrs W. Jones, of Wellington; Mrs S. Flighty, of Pahautanui; Mrs A. Morgan, of Johnsonville; Mrs C. O'Connell, of Hutt; Mrs W. MoGreadie, of Glasgow (Scotland!: and Mrs H. MoManaway, of Huntorrille.
