FISH MARKET.

AN UNFOUNDED STATEMENT.

The Mayor, Mr D. McLaren, desires to give an emphatic denial of the following statement which appeared in the “Post” last night: Arrangements have been completed by the City Council for the operation of the new municipal fish market, now being erected on Jervois quay, next to the naval boatshed. Provision will be made for a number of stalls, which can bo hired by the day or week, at a rental of 4s per day per stall- Stallholders will be entitled to carry on business from 6 a.m. to 4. p.m., while the city council will furnish an attendant t keep the market clean. No 'gutting will be allowed on the premises, but a trough and a supply of water for scalding will be provided. Stallholders will hav ( e to keep their own stalls in proper order.

"As a matter of fact,” says Mr McLaren, " the statement rather astonished me. It is absolutely unfounded. The city council has not yet considered the matter. It makes it appear as though the council had laid down a line of policy on the question, whereas the markets committee has not even dealt with it. There are quite a number of proposals under consideration regarding the fish market. It is very annoying to have these misleading statements published. As the markets committee may decide upon something entirely different, the statement makes the council look ridiculous.”
