FROM OUR’ OWN CORRESPONDENT. July 26. Heavy rains have fallen this last two days. The low lying country is all under water and the Manawatu river is still rising. On the hills there has been a heavy fall of snow. For this last six weeks very little work has been done at the mills, and in consequence money is very tight. For the first time in the history of Shannon a motion was passed against the private ownership of land. At the debating society the subject was threshed out, Mr Hensman leading the affirmative in a very able speech, upon which he was congratulated by all parties. A local company has purchased a picture show plant and will open once a week in the Druids’ Hall.

The pruning and spraying demonstration by the Government expert, Mr Stratford, which was to have taken place last Wednesday had to be postponed on account of the weather. Mr W. H. Gunning, who went Home on a visit about three months ago, writes that he will shortly leave for New Zealand. The Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co. has had a most prosperous year. The payments for butter-fat averaged as near as possible Is Id per lb. The ladies’ and men’s hockey clubs will jointlv hold an invitation social next month to wind up the season.

The Methodist Church members are preparing to provide the public with a good show on August 16th. The principal item on the programme is a Japanese fair.
