HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Hutt Borough Council met last evening; present—the Mayor (Mr E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Boots, Ball. Hob be, Hodgins,, Clendon, Kempthorno anil Hawthorn. ■

Mr W. S. Short, commissioner, notified that he had been appointed in terms of the Hutt Bailway and Improvement Act, 1903, to inquire into and report as to the proportion in which the cost of forming and constructing the new Hutt road should be borne by the local authorities. —Borough solicitor to bo asked to represent the council on the commission. The engineer and secretary of the fire brigade were appointed to confer and formulate a scheme whereby the water pressure difficulty at fires will be overcome.

An offer of £SO for the purcnase tf a manual fire-engine from the council was accepted. The engineer stated that on ar-a ot 10,707 square yards of footpaths had been tarred and sanded since the commencement of the year. f ince Ua ch .£272 7s 9d had been spent on footpaths, and £ll6 11s 7d previously, -he tctai being £3SS 19s 4d, which worked nut at under 5d per yard. During the past ten weeks only one full week has been worked by the men on the drainage wc>-ks. The cost of preparing the power station for the erection of the centrifugal pump amounted to £lO3. Objection was taken by councillors -to the Hutt Park committee offering portions of the park on long leases. —Objection to be forwarded to the park committee. It was decided to spend £l2 10s on rebinding 100 of the older books in the library. Mr T. F. Martin, solicitor to the municipal bodies, intimated that ho would be prepared to draft a by-law regulating motor, traffic in the borough. —Referred to works committee.
