TRAM CONDUCTOR KILLED
SKULL FRACTURED BY IRON STANDARD.
Frederick Hancock, a tram conduc. tor, met with a fata! accident between 1 and 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
Ho was on tho top of a doubledecker car, which was running along Fcatherston street, and was changing tho destination board. In leaning over tho top of the grille bis- head was dashed against one of the iron standards, which, situated between the two sets of rails, support the overhead wires. Ho was attended by Dr Anderson and removed to tho hospital, where he died at 10.25 o’clock last evening. Hancock, who resided in Tasman street, leaves a widow and three children. TWO HEN DROWNED. CAPSIZE OF A MOTOR LAUNCH. PEESS ASSOCIATION. WAIMATE, July 22. A sad drowning accident occurred at the mouth of tho Waihao river on Sunday afternoon. Three young men, named Kirkcaldy, Duncan, and Adams, owners of a motor launch, went for a sail, when the, engine of the launch stopped, and a strong current carried the launch towards the outlet. Two of tho occupants jumped out to swim ashore, but both were carried out to sea and drowned. Kirkcaldy’s body was recovered on Sunday evening, but Duncan’s has not yet been washed up. Adams remained in tho boat, and got on the highest part, and when the boat was passing an outlet box he caught hold of the box and drew himself ashore, and was thus saved. Tho launch was washed out to sea. POSTAL OFFICIAL DIES. GORE, July 22. Mr David M. 'MoKenzie, aged thirty, five, years, employed in the Postal Department for nearly twenty years, died on Sunday morning from "inflammation of the lungs. He served in the Timam and Dunedin post offices.

MAN HAS A HAND BADLY CRUSHED.
,i , PEESS ASSOCIATION. ... ~ ■ "" AUCKLAND,’ July 22 ' A startling'collision between a motorcar and two tramcars occurred this evening, by which Mr-Ferguson, a visitor from. Greymouth,. had one hand severely crushed. The' motor-car was driven by the owner, sir Percy Kingsweil, who passed in front of a tramcar towards the right. The driver failed to notice, another tramcar coming in the opposite direction, and the automobile' struck it. Tho impact -.threw tho motor back in front of the ’other car, and it was knocked off to the side of tho road. Mr Ferguson was thrown out. The other occupants of the motor-car were badly shaken. Mr Ferguson had a thumb amputated, and may lose the hand. The motor was badly damaged; FATAL COUGHING FIT. AUCKLAND, July 22. Eliza Bryan, aged seventy years, died at Newton after a severe coughing fit.
