I A MATINEE BENEFIT. The attendance at the exhibition of British pictures continues very satisfactory. The pupils attending the Terrace and Clvde Quay primary schools visited the gallery in large numbers yesterday morning. The exhibition will be opened again on Sunday afternoon, when a collection will be taken a.t the door.

Thi,-proprietors of the. Adi iphL-Pictir L* Theatre have generously offered to donate the proceeds of their initial matinee performance on Saturday afternoon to the Picture Purchase Fund. Tickets for the matinee may be obtained at the Art Gallery. An appeal is made to the general public to avail themselves of this opportunity to assist ■ the National Gallery movement and at tho same time shoxv their appreciation of the public spirit of the management. The "Evening Post” proprietors have purchased for the National Gallery the charming portrait study by Robert Hope, A.R.S.A., entitled "A Winsome Maid.”

The staff of the Post and Telegraph Department in the Wellington, Blenheim, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Wanganui districts have subscribed an amount of .£36, and a picture from the Baillio collection is to be purchased and presented to the National Gallery as a gift from the post and telegraph officers. , The contributions from the pupils attending the primary schools of Wellington and immediate suburbs are now coming to hand, the latest being those from the Newtown and Wellington South schools, and Mount Cook Girls’ (additional). The returns to hand from ten schools (out of about twenty-five appealed to) amount to over .£32. The donations to date are:—
