A “Times" representative had a private view of a collection of oil paintings, watercolours, ami pastel drawings m Hru-court anid Co.’s rooms. Lambton Quay, which the firm, have been instructed to offer at auction on Wednesday next. Iho pictures are from tho brushes of Messrs J. 31. Madden. Noel Barraml, C. D. Barraud. Lindauer, L. W. Wilson, W. F. Barraud, and Pox. “A Maori Woman and Child' is the gem of the collection. Lindauer’s knowledge of the Maori race enabled him to excel in this work, which has been treated with brilliancy. The colour scheme, notwithstanding its wonderful contrasts, js harmonious, and tho amount of detail which has been filled in is remarkable, ’I no • soft tones of tho faces of the mother and child, and tho brilliant colouring of tho mat on tho shoulders, make this picture a i delightful study. The ‘‘Valley of tho; Nistuen. Norway," and "Fishing Boats Leaving Whitby Harbour" are from tho brush of Mr J. M. Madden, and are worthy of attention. This artist has a prediction for brilliant colouring, and some of hia work in the collection is worthy of a place in any gallery. The work ofMessra C D., Noel, and W. F, Barraud, and It. W. Wilson is too well known to need comment. A brllUant piece of colouring by Professor V Loria, typical of his beautiful country, is' “Tho Island of Capri," with Vesuvius In tho background standing like a sentinel over the smiling waters of the Bay of Naples. Tho collection should appeal to the artistic taste of the public of Wellington.
