MASTERTON A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

MONTHLY MELTING. rfiOM OUE OWN COEEESPONDKNT. . December 9. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association was held - this afternoon, there being present Messrs H. Morrison (chairman), P. J. Dagg, H. Dagg, h. Harper, D. McGregor, G. Shaw, H. Evans, A. J. Percy, W. Cooper, G. C. Sumrncrell, B. Raynor, B. Gray, u. Buick, W. J, Welch, J. McKillop, J. B. Perry, and D. Caselberg. The secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society wrote that he had been instructed to convey the thanks of the council to the association for the offer to find a site for the fish-breeding and rearing ponds at Solway show grounds. The opinion of the council’s expert, after a close comparison of the present ponds and Solway, was in favour of the present site. The council had made a definite offer for five acres of the laud at present leased from the Benall estate trustees, but it is understood that the trustees would not dispose of anything short of the whole. It was reported that the fishponds had that morning been sold' to St. Patrick’s Church for school and church purposes, and that this would necessitate the removal of the ponds from the present sit© at the end of the lease in 1913.—The letter was received. ‘ ' Mr Arnold Weston, of Pahiatua, wrote suggesting better arrangements for the next show in regard to the blackboard in the ring, viz., that boards to face four ways should bo erected, and that large metal square 1 numbers painted white should bo r used.—The committee wore of opinion that - a triangular board would be made suitable/ and it was decided to refer the matter to the horse stewards. ' '*

Mr D. Bennett wrote accepting appointment as a' steward* and signifying his willingness to act in the' Romney classes. '* ; : - -•••

In reply to a suggestion by the association, that the name of the Kuripuni railway station be altered to Solway instead of ‘Purakaii,' the “general -manager of the railways wrote’’' that when the question was'undoi* discussion it was discovered that" the meaning of the name "Kuripuni” 'was r ‘objectionable. _ After giving the matter every consideration, he regretted that the application'to revert back to' the hame of Kuripuni instead of Purakau (if the Bailway Department could not name the station Solway) could not bo entertained. * The general practice in riaihihg stations is' to adopt Maori names wherever practicable, and as Purakau” is'stated to be the name of the locality it was accordingly adopted in preference to an English name. If the society could suggest a more suitable local 'Maori name its adoption would ! bo considered.—lt was’resolved to hold the matter oyer tilt the next iheeting. The secretary' of the- New Zealand Romney Marsh iSheepbreeders' Association wrote that the prizes'to be given in the” association V competition’ at the Masteftdn show'would bo for'Opens’ of fivo flock Romney fains from-any flock entered in the New Zealand Romney Marsh flock.book, and entered for the' Masterton show. The--Romney Association would appoint the judges for this class of rams,' as in the case of the prizes allot-ted'for‘the.-efcud rams entered for ; sale at the fair; "Messrs' A, : S. Holms' 1 and’ A. Beattie (Horbfata) would judge the Romney rams. , "

In regard to the suggested Government subsidy to’ A/and"P.'Associations, the secretary of the* 'Manawatu A. and P. Association' wrote that/owing to the delay 'caused through' ; tho, lateness, of - some of • the AV and P.'Associations in replying in cohnectioii it was found to be impossible to make arrangements for the Ministers to’ receive the proposed deputation before the closing of the ? session. Replies had been received from thirty-seven societies, only one dissenting,--

Mr G. C. Summerell referred in eulogistic terms to" the valuable ’services Mr J. : D. Cfuickshank, of 'Wellington, had rendered the association during the past fifteen .years. In the recent canvass made in Wellington for donations to the society's prize fund, the’help given to fhp canvassing v committee 1 by Mr Cruickshank had been of tho greatest value.' He (the speaker) had much pleasure in moving that the l, next • annual- meeting of members bo recommended" to elect Mr Cruickshauk an honorary life member of the association.

Other members of the committee spoke in a similar strain to Mr Summerell. The motion was" seconded’ by' Mr D, Caselberg and carried unanimously. 1 •• ‘ The'canvassing committee have collected ’ subscriptions"Ambuhtiilg' to over the prize • fund 'for" the next show. - This includes .£214 IQs received in donations in Wellington, an increase of &12‘compared with last'- year; 'Members of the general committee present subscribed in the room £SO is towards tho* prize'fund.
