Chess and Draughts

(Column Conducted by "W.F.C.”) Wellington Chess Club. A committee meeting of tbe above club was held on Wednesday evening, Mr E. \V. JL’etherick president) occupying the chair. Mr 8. J. Tatham was elected a country member, and Mr S. Faulkner an active. A letter was read from the New Zealand Chess Association notifying that entries close on tly* 11th inst. for the tournament which commences in Napier on or about Boxing Day to decide the chess championship of New Zealand for the year of 1512. It was unanimously decided to nominate as the club's representatives Mr W. E. Mason (the present champion) and Mr H. L. James. The meeting concluded by the chairman handing his trophy (commonly known as the "Petheriok No. 2 trophy') to this year's winner, Mr Gyles, senr., who received the congratulations of his fellow committeemen.

At the termination of the meeting the ladder match between the hon. secretary (Mr Douglas) and tho president (Mr E. \V. Petherick) was concluded,— victory resting with the former. The final game of tho Barnes v. AV. E. Mason match for rung 1, had to bo postponed as a cold prevented the latter from attending. It will probably be contested this evening.

Another round has been got off in the summer handicap tourney in which Mr Croxton is now leading.* Tbe best scores to date are as follows;

Class. AVpn. Lost. Croxton 5 5 1 Cimino . 4 3 1 Cornwall 5 3 1 Gyles, senr.,.«» 14 3 Douglas 5 4 3 Jolly 5 4 3 Grantham ***..: 2 4i 4$

The other seven competitors have, so fur, failed to win half their games. At present it looks as if the three book prizes will be annexed by "tho three C's!"

Working Men's Club. A special general meeting of the above club's chess and draughts jbayets was held oil the'lst inst., the chairman (Mr \V. U. LightJoofc) presiumg over a large attendance, it was unanimously decided to close the current annual Handicap chess and draughts tourneys on the 12tn inst. A draft of tile proposed ladder rules was placed oh tne . notice-board for the consideration of the members, with a' view to their adoption at the next meeting with whatever modifications it may be deemed expedient to make.

Mr A. G. Pell, hon. secretary to the New Zealand Chess Association, forwarded an intimation that tne next quarterly meeting of the association's council would bo v held on the 11th inst., and also that entries closed on that dato lor the tournament to decide the chess championship of New Zealand.’ Mr Barnes notified that he bad entered into an engagement which would prevent him from competing at/the forthcoming championship congress (which -commences in Napier on or about Boxing Day. As Mr Barnes has competed regularly from 13&U onwards without a break this announcement caused no small disappointment,— a feeling that will, we are sure, be shared in all the chess circles of the Dominion. The club will therefore on this gccasion bo represented by its next best player, Mr P. K. Kelling, provided a-, difficulty in the matter of leave of absence can be overcome.
