FLYING WON BY GLENSPRING.

FBOH Otm SPECIAL EEPOETEB. BLENHEIM, October 11. Tho spring meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club commenced tohlay in perfect weather on the Riverlands racecourse, which was looking bright and green, tho track being in perfect order. Tho attendance was quite up to tho average, tho special train being well filled, wliilo many preferred to go out by the road, a very dusty experience. Mr C. O’Connor was in excellent form at the barrier, the starts being very even. Mr B. Coleman officiated as judge. All the arrangements were well carried out by the secretary, Mr L. Griffiths. The betting was fairly spirited considering the small fields, tho sum of JM932 going through tho totalizator, as against Tit (jib on the corresponding day last year, when, however, L 134 was received from bookmakers’ fees. NOTES ON THE RACING The ball was set rolling with tho Maiden Hack Race, for which Indra and Portland Lady were in most request. The race was not particularly interesting, as nothing but the placed horses ever had a chance. From, a capital line Inveran jumped off very smartly, and led Portland Lady three lengths round the bend, with the rest launched. Inveran still had a good lead as they turned into the straight, but directly Deeley, on Portland Lady, ranged up alongside the brown gelding compounded and woe beaten by a length and a half. Alofa finished fairly well three lengths off, third, with Indra close up, fourth. The winner is a nicelybuilt chestnut filly, who, on appearance, should bring no discredit to tho Waikanao stallion Achilles. Inveran had all the best of the luck, but is evidently only a moderate. The two-year-old Cyra, a stocky little son of Cyrus and Aphrodite, galloped well for three furlongs. The First Handicap Trot proved hardly the sort of race to encourage an enthusiastic love for the harness horse. "Woodboll led off by breaking his bit, tho driver, Dunn, being thrown out of the sulky. Tho mare then bolted two rounds of the course and was scratched, , the money invested on the bay being refunded. Plain Joe led for a furlong, wh,en Lord Roanchild, a well-fancied gelding on the limit, went to tho front, and that was tho end of it, for nothing afterwards got near him. Plain Joe broke all tho way down tho back, and at tho end there was a fair race for second place between Terry L. and The Bann. Lord Roanchild won by 10 yards from Terry L., who beat Tho Bann by 15 yards, the others, of whom some tried to trot ajid failed and others did not try and succeeded, being spread' round, tho course.

Tho Welter Hack Handicap gave rise to a capital finish. Aborcoed was most fancied. Mr O’Connor got them off in a splendid line. Rongomau hopped out in front, but he soon fell back. Conquest then took Portland Bill to tho front, and led from Beacon down the back. At the bend Astonishment ran up into second place, -with Kopano closing up. At the distance Kopano and Astonishment were together, ana in a good finish tho former won by a neck. Portland Bill appeared to bo two lengths off, third, but tho judge gave that position to Rongomau—another obvious mistake. As Mr Dwyer purchased Kopane a few weeks ago, and as he had a good win, ho soon got his purchase money back. Abercood. the farourito, was never out of the ruck, and was the very last but one to finish.

The field for the biff event, the Blenheim Handicap, vas reduced to four. Negative being withdrawn. Bracken was soon out in front, leading ont of the straight by two lengths from First Battery. who was pulling Price out of the saddle, while St. Felix whipped in the

field. Down the back Hirini ran up second, but Bracken was still going so easily in front that he looked a likely winner. At tho bend, however, Deeley gave *St. Felix his head, and in a flash he was in front, and, coining on, won easily by two ‘lengths from Bracken, with 1 irst tery half a length further away. Ijosser had tho winner in great condition, and Deeley rode a nicely-judged race > bringing off the hat trick. Bracken ran well, but found the distance a trino too far.

Daunton was tho popular pick in tho Spring Handicap, but ho got into a. bad position early in tho race. When, the barrier went up Katua whipped round and took no part in tho contest. Lacirono was soon out in front, leading Indra and Ahuapai. Daunton closed up when heads were turned for home, but Ladrone easily held him at bay, winning by a length. Ahuapai, who was disappointed when making his run, was a length and a half off third, with Indra last. Gibson had Ladrone looking well, and ho was allowed to make his own pace—a slow one.

Glenspring brought ofi a very attractive performance in tho Flying Handicap, ami there cau be no doubt that on" his own course at Riverlands the Glenoglo gelding is a very hard nut to crack. The start was rather spoilt by Royal Marino being loft several lengths through tho field crowding in. while Glenspring appeared to get a flier. Ho led down tho back by three lengths, and never being really asked gallop, cantered in two lengths ahead of Toango, with Royal Marino, who made up a tremendous lot of ground, a fair third, Leahora fourth and Aema hist. The winner carried 9st 9lb, and could easily have reduced the time of Imin IGsoc. Ho lias a lot of pace, and may bo a possibility for the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton. but unfortunately is not too sound. Toango galloped without life. Royal Marino would certainly have defeated him but for being chopped out at the start.

In the Electric Hacx Handicap Katua was tho favourite, but ho could not pace it with Emma. The Conqueror maro pimped out very smartly, led all the way and romped in two lengths ahead of the favourite, with Ahuapai a moderate third. A rumour that the winner was on tho unpaid forfeit list for non-pay-ment of LI accident fund caused her to pay a bigger dividend than she might otherwise have done. She is certainly a smart galloper. Katua ran rather well, bat Amberstone, after running iveil for half , a mile, faded out.
