INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATION

THE ANNUAL REPORT. Tho annual, meeting of the Wellington Provincial Industrial Association was to have been held last evening, but as there was net a quorum, present an adjournment was made until 8 p.m. on Monday next. Tho sixteenth annual report, whicn was adopted by the committee, stated that the year had been a memorable one owing to tho holding of tho Coronation Exhibition. The committee did not wish to be considered pessimistic, but it had to be admitted that many manufacturers had still much to complain of, owing to the strong competition of other countries and tho excessive amount of imports. There was very little that New Zealand was not able to manufacture and yet the Dominion’s import figures were surprising. Imports for the year 1911 amounted to ±T7,718,183, an increase of .E 1,859,004 compared with the-previous year; while the exports for 1911 amounted to .£21,513,uu6, as against -621,191,809 for 1910—an increase ot .£52,091. What’New Zealand v. as manufacturing was nothing compared with what we could manufacture if the required assistance was forthcoming. Many skilled workers had left tho Dominion because of intermittent employment. Many manufacturers were to be congratulated on their success at the Festival of Empire Exhibition in England. Gold medals were secured by several Now Zealand firms. A Grand Prix was- awarded tho Westport Coal Company and tho New Zealand Shipping Company. In regard to tho position . brought about through the AuditorGeneral refusing to ; pass for payment rent which the Education Board had been paying to tho association for an office and industrial hall in Victoria street, tho report expressed the hope that legislation would be passed to right tho position. I “It will be readily admitted,” continued | thoT-eport, "that after all the association I • has done for technical 'education, the as-: sociation should not find itself in the ; present position." Tile committee ex-: tended thanks to tho guarantors of tho : J 2090 for the exhibition. It was pleas- : ing to record that some of the exhibitors i find . written stating , they had derived, great benefit already by having made i exhibits. I
