MONARCHISTS DEFEATED RETREAT INTO SPAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LISBON, October 9. Tho Government troops, after sustaining tho Monarchist fire for an hour, occupied Vinhacs, and chased tho Monarchists across the border. Two of the pursuers wero wounded. There is still a small concentration of Monarchists at Salgueiros. Guerilla operations aro taking place in tho Vianna do Castcllo district, on the west coast. Tho Portuguese Government has protested to Spain against the violation of frontier rights. Tire Premier, Senhor Chagas, in an interview, declared that the invasion had failed because tho army had been faithful. Forbearance had been shown to tho Monarchists, but henceforth severe measures would bo taken. Tho Minister for AVar has resigned. Tho Government is asking the President, Dr A'rriaga, to summon the Cortes and provide means for tho rapid trial of Monarchist conspirators. MONARCHISTS DISHEARTENED. MADRID, 1 October 9. Tho Monarchists withdrew disheartened after the failure of the plot to establish Royalist headquarters at Oporto.
