CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING OF COUNCIL. At a meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Mr H. C, Tewsley presiding, a communication was received from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce intimating that’ they had written to the Minister of Hallways suggesting that a system should be instituted of issuing left parcels labels in triplicate instead ot in duplicate. It was pointed out that such a syst<m would bo a great convenience to passengers, who could pick up tneir purchases at railway stations, one portion of the receipt being affixed to the parcel as at present, another portion given to the purchaser of the goods, and a third retained by the person sending the parcel. At the present time if a sends a parcel and forwards nvs portion of the ticket to the punrna«w. lie is without evidence that left the parcel at all. The following resolution was passed: ‘‘That this chamber supports the proposal of tho New’ Zealand Farmers' Union for a through railway booking system by rail and sea through the Dominion, and is of opinion that such a system would prove a great convenience to the public and facilitate trade ns well as being a source of revenue to the Hailway Department.*' That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the chambers of commerce throughout -New Zealand and their sxv&ort asked. It was pointed out "That if such a system wore instituted it would lie a great benefit to growers of fruit and produce as well as to tho business community generally. SALE OF POISONS BILL. The secretary reported that representations had been made in regard to this Bill, which affected wholesale druggists., sellers of sheep-dips, etc. It was hoped that the clauses relating to sale of sheep-dips • and horticultural preparations would be so altered as to cause the minimum of inconvenience to merchants and others handling these lines. TRADE OPENINGS. The Chamber of Commerce is constantly receiving inquiries from British, Continental, ana Eastern houses for representatives and agents in' New Zealand. The secretary of the chamber has instituted a ‘‘Trade Openings File," which members of tho chamber are at liberty .to inspect at any time. Japanese firms are particularly persistent in their inquiries for trade possibilities. GRAXN SACKS.' The secretary reported that at the request of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union he had communicated with the importers of grain sacks asking if they would make representations to the manufacturers to place distinguishing marks on sacks to snow the different sizes. FOODSTUFFS.

The consul for the Netherlands advised the chamber that the export of rice from the Netherland Indies had been prohibited. The prohibition does not, however, apply to existing contracts. The secretary of the Netherland Chamber of Commerce, Melbourne, forwarded to the chamber conditions concerning Government sale of coffee in Java. These are available in the Chamber of Commerce for the inspection of merchants interested. GENERAL. The report of the inaugural meeting of the .British Imperial Council of Commerce, was received from the secretary of the London Chamber of Commerce, and the Wellington Chamber invited to join and send a representative, preferably a resident in Loudon. The chamber resolved to renew its prize of twenty-four guineas for proficiency in reading, composition, and arithmetic amongst the pupils of the Wellington schools. Mr E. J. Hyams and A. D.’ Riley and Co., Ltd., were elected members of the chamber.
