FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. CARTERTON, October 10. The Gladstone Young Men's Society lias decided to reopen the season about the beginning of April next. The Belvedere school committee is going in for establishing swimming baths. On Wednesday evening next a chess match, Idasterton v. Wairarapa, will bo played at Carterton. At a late hour on Saturday night the roof of the dairy belonging to Mrs I'Parker, caught fire, but was fortunately discovered in time to bo extinguished before much damage was done. The State Fire Office has an insurance over the property. At a meeting of the Carterton Horticultural Society, it was decided to hold a spring show on November 25th. Mr W. Dounard was appointed honorary secretary in place of Mr J. J. Mead, who had resigned. Mr Mead was accorded a vote of-thanks for his past services.
Tho Carterton Tradesmen's Association met last night, and decided to ask the shopkeepers to make special displays in their shop windows during show week. It was resolved to close at noon the second day of tho show. Several other matters wore dealt with and the meeting adjourned. Mrs Louisa Bright, widow of the late Mr Richard Bright, one of the best respected men of Grey town, died last night after a lingering illness. The late Mrs Bright was sixty-fonr years of age, and a daughter of the late Mr Edwin Ticehurst, one of Grcytown's earliest settlers. ' She leaves an adopted daughter, and a, large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her decease.
