GRAIN AND PRODUCE CANTERBURY 'MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, October 10. The local wheat market etill keeps very quiet. The offerings are mostly, in small

lote, no lines of any size being oh the market/ A few small sales continue to be made on the basis of 3s 6d. to os 6sd per bushol, and 3s 7d at country stations, according to distance. These prices are for Hunter's and Tuscan, Pearl being worth a little more, though there is not the same demand for Pearl this season as in some other ■ years, in consequence of the other varieties being so sound and hard. Oatsheaf chaff is firmer, 90s now being the general price, and in some cases growers are not willing to accept this figure. The demand is purely for local consumption, as no coastal export can be done at the prices. ' .

Potatoes are rather firmer, as offerings are scarce. Farmers arc now busy with spring work, and being time employed are prepared to hold a little longer and risk the market while prices are so low. The price now generally offered is 35s atcourj. try stations, and the lower quotations being given from the south prevent merchants offering more for shipment to the North Island.

EJRUIT AJH) PJRODUCE WELLINGTON MAEKET3. The continued seasonable weather is having an influence upon the- fruit trade, a heavier demand having been created for all varieties. It was anticipated that transhipments of Tongan bananas would have arrived yesterday, via Auckland, but not any were forward. The usual weekly shipment of Now South Wales fruits is due to-day, and as the season is', advancing only a email eupply is likely to come to hand. Not- only has the local requirements to be met with out of shipments , to this centre, but coastal and country needs have to be catered for. On Thursday direct shipments of Cook Island bananas and oranges are duo by the s.s. Jlaitai, but shipments of the latter are not expected to be . heavy, and bananas will also be light. ; On Friday the usual monthly cargo of bananas is arriving from Suva; - but advices point to only a ridiculously small quantity coming forward. In the face "of this it can only be. expected' that extreme prices will rule. Further shipments of Californian apples are duo on Thursday, and owing to the general dearth of this line high values must eventuate. Small lote of hothouse tomatoes are arriving from Auckland, adding to the supplies from the. Hutt. . Local lemons and passions are now being inquired for owing to Sydney exportations being meagre, POTATOES AND ONIONS.

The southern supplying markets for old potatoes have shown a stronger ton© lately and .prices have advanced to a slight extent. The prevailing elriko has, to . some extent, interfered with shipments coming forward, as the* small steamers are greatly utilised in the transit of produce. Values, despite the rise, however, for old potatoes are very low still. Shipments of new potatoes from Sydney have already reached . Auckland, but so far no supplies have come forward to Wellington. The quantity arriving from the Auckland district %3 not particularly heavy, and consequently a good demand is being faced. No Otaki growntubers have been marketed, but consignments should shortly bo forthcoming from that district, and should display the usual good quality. An excellent inquiry has resulted for onions lately, and Californian are receiving the greatest measure of support, on account of their keeping condition. . The Melbourne market remains steady, but tho season now being w$U advanced and tli© bulbs mostly soft and growing makca business somewhat precarious. Old-potatoes £3 10s ;to £3 15s per ton, new potatoes prime- samjilcs 3d to 3id lb, small 2d to 2id; .onions, Victorian £7 per ton, Californian - £l2 10a to . £l3. OTHER VEGETABLES. Cauliflowers, cabbages, parsnips, marrows, and pumpkins etill continue fri very short supply, and correspondingly; high, prices are ruling. Other lines, such as rhubarb, green peas; and asparagus are also keenly sought after; generally tho vegetable market is in a very healthy state and supplies are below consumption.
