NAVAL PRIZE BILL

AMENDED BY (COMMONS’ STANDING COMMITTEE. By Telegraph—Pross Association—Copyright. (Received August 4, 8.50 p.m.) LONDON, August 4. Despite the opposition of Dr T. J. Macnamara, Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty, the House of Commons’ Standing Committee amended the Naval Prize Bill, by providing that British ships recaptured from an enemy should be returned to the owners free of salvage. It was argued that, as shipowners made a proper contribution to the navy, they are entitled to complete protection, and should not be compelled to pay salvage. - The Government undertook to pool prize-money for the benefit of all officers and men engaged in a war. The committee, without ■ further amendment, reported the Bill for its third reading.
