THE CESSION OF TAHITI.

The “ Echo de Paris ” states that Herr von Kiderlen-Waechter, German Minister for Foreign Affairs, has asked M. Camhon, tho French Ambassador in Berlin, for the cession to Germany of Tahiti, in the Pacific, in return for a free hand by France in Morocco.

Tahiti is the* Ifirgosb island of the Society Group, situated in the South Pacific, about midway between Australia and South America. The area is about 603 sauarc miles and tho population 11,000. It exports copra, mother-of-pearl shell, vanilla* and other tropical products. The island contains valuable deposits of phosphate. There is a steamer service between Tahiti and San Francisco. The* French took possession of the island in 1844 and assumed a protectorate over tho Windward group. This arrangement lasted till 1880, when the whole group was formally annexed by France. ‘ln 1887 the French, by a convention with tho British Government, obtained tho remainder of the Society Islands, the Leeward group, of which they took possession in March, 1888.
