MIRAMAR BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL; ', Hie fortnightly meeting of the Miramair Borough Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr J. Brodie) presided, and thorp wore also present — Councillors Bowie, Stone, Richards, Telford and Laurenson.

Mr li. L. Mestayer, reporting on the water supply and sewerage schemes, stated that practically the whole, of the concrete work at the low level reservoir had Been completed. A few pipe connections had still to be made and then worn would cease for a month before the roof timbers could bo removed, so as to secure the thorough setting of the concrete. The concrete retaining wall had been, constructed and had already proved a great protection to the reservoir against damage by slips. The first shipment of domestic supply meters had come to hand. In regard to ejectors and machinery u contract had been let by cable to Messrs Hughes and Lancaster, who had undertaken to deliver tho whole of tho plant within six months. Good progress was being made with the laying of tho Soatoun portion of tho water mains, but the Miramar section had not been so satisfactory since the lost heavy rains. Tho ground was so full of water that the men wore hampered in making the joints. If conditions did not improve tho work would have to be suspended for a time; and the laying of sewers in tho high ground at Scatoun would bo put in hand. The cast-iron, pipes tu be laid by the Harbour Board in Maramar cutting were now being distributed along the road. The total length of mains laid was 235 chains, A financial statement attached to the report showed that tho total amount spent in contracts one to nine, up to July 31st last, was JH0.375. The amount outstanding on contracts was <£2o4-1, while .£2135 had been spent in wages, purchase of reservoir site, materials, etc. Tho estimated cost to complete the laying of the water mains in the low level area was J.'1265.

The borough engineer reported that the tree-planting work was completed with the exception of pari of the protecting fence of the Park road plantation. The expenditure on wages to date amounted tu •

On the recommendation of tho borough engineer it was decided that an. increase in wages of sixpence a day be given to nil the meu employed by the council on labouring work. The increase means a payment of X’> Ss a week extra to thirtysix men on the water works and £2 2s a week extra to fourteen men employed on road works.
