THE LATE MR TAYLOR

APPRECIATION' BY THE LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD. PUESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHTTRCH, August 2. At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to-day the chairman, Mr IT. Friedlandor. said that the remarkable tribute paid to their late colleague, Mr T. E. Taylor, on Sunday last must be looked upon as an expression of* the people's deep appreciation of the groat and prolonged services rendered to humanity by him. Sincere indeed were the last respects paid to him who, by strenuous years of ungrudging work, had won the admiration of friends and opponents alike.

He moved, ‘That the Lyttelton Harbour Board, record their deep sense of regret at the death of their late colleague, Thomas Edward Taylor, who has been a member of the board since February, 1909. The board further desire to place on record their full recognition and appreciation of tho valuable services rendered by tho late Mr Taylor during the period he has held a seat on this hoard, and members also .respectfully desire to convey to Mrs Taylor and family their sincercst sympathy with them in their bereavement.’’ Tho motion was spoken to by several members and carried. MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME , MINISTER, CHRISTCHURCH. August 2. Sir* Joseph Ward has cabled from Colombo to Mrs Taylor:—“Deepest sympathy in the death of your husband. Though w© often differed I admired his courage and brilliancy.” THE WIDOW’S THANKS. VERT GRATEFUL FOR GENERAL SYMPATHY. CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. Mrs T. E. Taylor has asked the Px-oss Association to express the gratitude of herself and her family for the sympathy extended them during the past week. "I should very much like to have replied to all the telegrams and beautiful messages personally,” she writes, "but there have been so many that I cannot hope to answer them all. We have been immeasurably comforted and sustained by the sympathy of Mr Taylor's friends, and indeed of all the people of New Zealand, and especially by tho beautiful spirit of appreciation of our dear, one. The kind words that have come to us from every part of tho Dominion have given us courage and strength to bear onr great lees, and we cannot even try to express our deep gratitude in words.” MEETING AT TUIIARU. TIMARU, August 2. At a well attended mooting to-night it was decided to open a Taylor memorial fund. A committee of thirty was elected. It was decided that lists bo so circulated as to give everyone in the town and district an opportunity of contributing. The opinion was expressed that very few people in Timaru would fail to contribute. A fair sum was subscribed in the room.
