TRAFFIC RETURNS
NEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAY AND TRAAIWAY STATISTICS. 87 Toberaph— Press Association— Copyright (Received August 2, 0.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 1. The annual report of the Railway Commissioner shows that the gross earnings of the railways and tramways during the last financial year were £7,407,836, an increase of 10.1-1 per cent, over tho previous year. The railway income amounted to £4 13s 6d per, cent, on the capital invested, an increase of Is lid over last year.
The tramway earnings were £4 10s 8d per cent, on the capital invested, an increase of 2d over last year.
The surplus of revenue over expenditure on the railways and tramways was £601,625, an increase of £33,458 on the year.
The trams carried over 230,000,000 passengers without a fatal accident.
The commissioner adds that tho limit of their capacity has nearly been reached, and that a new and comprehensive scheme is urgently needed.
