THE BRIGGS CASE
OHDEB MADE AGAINST THE FATTIEE. Thomas AVells, a middle-aged man, a teamster employed at a sawmill at To Iviri Taranaki, was charged before Hr W. G. Eiddell, S.M., in tho Magistrate’s Court yesterday with being the lather of an illegitimate child of which Ellen Briggs' was tho mother. Chief-Detective Bvoberg prosecuted, and Mr V. B. Meredith appeared for defendant. who pleaded not guilty. Mr j J McGrath watched the proceedings on behalf of Ellen Briggs. Complainant in evidence stated she had known the defendant for about three years, and had boon engaged to him. He had paid witness ,£G when she first came to Wellington (before the. child was born) and had later paid .£3 to the matron of tho receiving home. Mr McGrath objected to the complainant being cross-examined as to the breaking off of the engagement. His Worship upheld the objection. Defendant then admitted paternity, and was ordered to pay 7s 6d per week towards the support of the child.
