JEOlt ODE OWN ■ CORRESPONDENT. July 26. The , aphis blight ha a been responsible for tho destruction of large areas of turnips in the district. Mr W. F Massey intends to deliver an address a* Mas ter ton shortly. It is aboutaix years since tho leader of the Oppoeiuon last visited Masterton. Reports aro coming to hand from all parts of tho district in reference to the destruction to grass caused by, the grass grub. Many of tho swede crops in Masterton have been attacked by chib root. Electric light is being installed in the Masterton Town Hall. The cold and wet weather that has been experienced in the Ilasterton district during the past few days has been severely felt by weak sheep,- many having succumbed to the rigorous conditions obtaining. Mr Purcell Webb, of Masterton, is lying roriously ill in "Wanganui, where ho is paying a visit. Captain and Mrs Moss, who have been on a trip to England, have returned to Masterton. In. a match at the Farmers’ and Commercial Club last evening a local amateur .billiard player named Alf. Congdon made a break of 16& Mr R. Cuthbortson, secretary of the Southland A. and P. Society, has bebn on a visit to Masterton, and has inspected the Solway showgrounds, which be considers to bo the'finest in New Zealand. It is probable that the Southland Society will take Solway as the model for their new showgrounds. Information has been received in Masterton that tho weather on the East Coast lias been very rough, and that tho seas are the heaviest experienced for twenty five years.
