MANAWATU NOTES
¥2OU CUE OWN CORRESPONDENT PALMEESTON, July 28. At a well-attended meeting of the Manawatu Officers’ Club last night Colonel Chavtor delivered an interesting address on “Discipline and Organisation.” The Hon. W. Pitt paid a visit of in speotion to the Palmerston Municipal Opera House yesterday in connection with tho proposed improvements, and will report to the council at a later date. Mr Pitt returned to Napier to-day. Surgeon-Major O'.Brier and Captain Peach conducted the first of tho medical examinations in connection with tho compulsory training scheme on AVednes day night. Out of seventy youths examined only two were medically unlit. Eighty more will bo examined to-night, and the remainder next week. A meeting of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Veterans’ Association was held this week, the vice-president, Captain J. D. E. Hewitt, presiding. It was decided to establish a benevolent fund to asist members, and also to petition Parliament to grant pensions to all holders of tho New Zealand war medal. A welcome was tendered last night at the Salvation Army hall to Lieutenant Lovell, tho new assistant officer. Welcome speeches were delivered by Adjutant and Mrs Hayward and’other officers, and items wore contributed by bandsmen.
