Palmer, honorary secretary of the Wellington branch of the Navy League, has circularised headmasters of schools as follows : “ Following n]i my recent circular letter in which the subject for this year’s essay competition was mentioned as ‘ The Navy During the Tudor Period,' it has since been decided (upon the suggestion bf Mr George HacMorran, chairman of the Headmaster's' Association) to adopt as an alternative subject, ‘The, Immense Importance of Maintaining an All-Powerful British .Navy as the Only Means of Securing the Empire's Safety.'The first-named subject is open to .those schoolmasters who may. jjerhaps, prefer to adopt it; hut, as Mr MacMorran - very truly points out, we. cannot 100 frequently impress on, the minds of ths boys and girls the vital necessity of ths retention of British 'naval supremacy. Tire form of essay now proposed is practically on the same lines as last .rear's competition. Ten per cent, of the names of the best competitors should bo submitted to this office not later than October Ist."
