TRENTHAM TRACK NOTES

VriNLING-XJP GALLOPS, A very heavy frost was experienced in, the Hutt Valley on Wednesday night, one of the most severe of tho winter. Vestorj day morning was intensely cold, and it was a little after 8 o’clock betore training operations commenced. Tho sun soon, made his presence fett, however, and for the remainder of the morning training was carried on under very pleasant weather conditions. A fair number of sporting enthusiasts journeyed out from town to see the final gallops, but they were not rewarded witn anything of a sensational nature. Trainers used tho sand gallop for finishing off their charges. J. W. Lowe was tho early bird, and be sent Effort (VV, ilyan) and Lambton U-L Gordon) for a good working gallop of a mile at half pace, the pair finishing up their task in a resolute manner.

Somersault (light boy) and Plitaway (P. hi. Jones) did a serviceable gallop of seven furlongs. These Chokebore representatives should run prominently in their engagements, as they arc both very fit. Ainsdale, the Karamu two-year-old, strode over a circuit in a stylo that betokened good prospects for him at the meeting. Lovell (H. Telford) strode over a oonpde of miles at a good half pace. Mr Wilson’s jumper appears in good heart. Kopek (L. Traill) and Kina (J 3. Murtagh) were associated in a capital six furlongs sprint, tho last five being left behind in Xmin G -l-Ssec, The former was well in front, which augurs well for his Winter Cup prospects. Te Kahurangi strode over a circuit iu a very impressive manner. This Porirua candidate appeared to relish his task, and pulled up very fresh. Merrie Time (B. McGregor) and Merrie Zealand (W. Eyan) were sent out together for a good working gallop at threequarter pace, with a brush over the Inst four furlongs, the pair finishing together. Merrie Zealand has a slight cold, but will probably fulfil his Parliamentary Handicap engagement. This pair will be the Messrs Adams’ sole representatives at the meeting. Pleiades, whose chance of running prominently in tho Steeplechase on Wednesday next is highly assessed, strode over a couple of miles in a manner suggestive of the fact that Percy Johnson has this ’chaser in excellent fettle.

Semaphore (A. Whittaker) was allotted half pace work, pulling up very fresh. Tho Auckland rider will pilot Mr Soaraes’ filly in tho Trial Plato. liongstep (H. Gray) ran home from the half-mile post in 5-lsec, a good gallop. The chestnut mare Levant (T. Pritchard), who looks in capital trim after her long retirement, was allotted halfpace work. Aricm (Lorrigan) was restricted to three-quarter pace work. V. Colello has the black daughter of Meirivree in great fettle.

St. Petersburg, with L. Traill in the raddle, did a serviceable_ working gallop. Tliis Trial Plate candidate appears a much improved animal. Septimus (W. Ryan) made many friends by the maimer in which he strode over six furlongs. Albert Goodman has this gelding in the pink of condition. Golden Water (J. Hercoct) was allotted strong to half-paco work over a couple of miles. The chestnut looks tuned up to concent pitch. Bollin (A. Julian) jumped a conplo of hurdles. At the first hnrdle he pocked a trifle, but at the next obstacle be rose well and cleared the batten in good stylo. This Koramn gelding should make a capable hurdler, being endowed with Htarnina and pace. Plectrakoff (H. Gray) v/out a circuit in

a very impressive manner, which speaks well for his Parliamentary Handicap prospects. The gelding will probably start a warm favourite m tho event named. . . Bracken, pulling very hard, left seven furlongs behind in an attractive manner. The Epaulet gelding is evidently very fit. The black raare Merozo was allotted half-pace work. The full sister to Clemora hn-s received a thorough preparation for her contests at the gathering. My Lawyer (J. Beale) executed a couple of rounds at half pace. Tho southern horso will have many admirers when ho sports silk to-morrow. St. Bill, with the diminutive apprentice C. Garment on his back, was set to jump a hurdle. Tho first time the gelding refused, but being put to it aptain cleared the battens in good style- Ino youngster appears perfectly at homo, and handles his mounts with some judgment. Garment is always associated with at. Bill’s schooling work. Elya ran four furlongs at a strong three-quarter pace, pulling up very fresh. TMs hurdler has proved himself a good one before now. Whakawcira and Centaur were indulged in half-pace tasks, acquitting themselves well. X-’arftutn, looking as fit as hands could make him, executed a pleasing working gallop. The old fellow is reported to be better than has been tho case for some time past. T. Pino was his pilot yesterday, and will ride him in all his contests at the meeting. Kpsom Lass (H. Gray) and To Waharoa (R. Barlow) hopped off from the halfmile post and ran homo in 52 l-ssec. This was the best gallop of the morning, Gray’s mount having a slight advantage at the finish.

Salopin {E. Murtagh) and Rib atone Pippin (L. Hill) were exercised over the obstacles. The former jumped m a faultless stylo but the latter’s display was very disappointing and caused some merriment to tho onlookers. Nappor (A. Julian) was tried over the hurdles, jumping very cleanly. Miss Explosion (E- Pope), looking very fit, was restricted to three-quarter pace work. This Auckland jumper is in capital trim. Wauchopo (11. Gray) strode over a mile in good style. The northerner should play a prominent part during tho three days*’ racing. Waiputere and Te Ru were alloted serviceable gallops. This pair of Feild-ing-trained hurdlers appear to have come through a sound preparation. North'East (11. Telford) strode over a circuit in an attractive manner, moving very freely. Tho gelding is evidently in capital form. Longner (N. Campbell) was given a bout of the hurdles. Ho jumped somewhat carefully at first, but, gaining confidence at tho other obstacles, he cleared them fairly well. Lady Fran (Sid Reid) left five furlongs behind in Imin 5 2-ssec. TMs chestnut mare is very well at present. Splash (D. McMillan) did a useful round at half pace, finishing up very strongly. Morecambe (F. D. Jones) and. Dreadless (P. Brady), the filly being in sweaters, (lid a strong gallop of a mile. Tho .latter had a trifle the best of the argument with her stable mate.as the post was passed. Compass, Fond Memory and Torbelle were sent out on a round of the hurdles. The former soon had Ms companions in trouble and finished well in frontFond Memory and Torbelle jumped fairly well, but the pair are still in need of improvement. John (C. Carmont) St. Gate (R. Young) and Taft (W. Ryan) moved off from the five furlong post and, after going a few r hundred yards, the former got in front. > Stalling off strong challenges by tho other pair ho beat them nicely by a length. John was timed to run. the distance in Imin 5 3-sscc, a good go. Tyrannic (N, Campbell) Egypt (S. Crawford), Monorose, Souite, Sylvia Maid (A- Watson), Amaru and a number of others were alloted serviceable tasks.
