NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "Tho Judge.") _ . , r _ -j.t it . T i’lrond

In connection with the C.J.C. Grand National meeting it may be will to. give owners and trainers a final reminder that general entries close with -Ur W. ii. 11. Wanklyn, the secretary, at 8 i>.m. this evening. Acceptances for the G.N. Steeplechase, G.N. Hurdles and Winter Cup must be made at the tame time. The Birkenhead mar© Iney is a go°d deal fancied for the Parliamentary Handicap, for which it is said she has been 'backed for a fair amount. The ware is looking the picture of health, and 13 very fit. Percenter has been scratched for all engagements at the W.K.C. meeting. . Hydrant reached Trentham from Napier last night. The chestnut will start in the Hack and Hunters' Steeple' chaso on Saturday. It will be the first run in his new owner's colours. I\ Flynn will rido Compass in the Winter Hurdles. The Day star geklirug looks remarkably well, and, as he has not been badly treated by Che handicap■per, a good many are sure to fancy his •chance. H. Tate is to haye the mount on Lady Mildred in the Trial Plate on Saturday. H. Hatch will be up on Big Blast, Undecided, and Merry Prank in their respective engagements to-morrow.

P. Coffey, the Wanganui trainer, iviio has the Trent ham candidates Compass and Lady Mildred in his stables, is makid# a capital recovery from his recent illness.

Mr BidwilTs pair. Provocation and Ovation, were due to arrive at Trent'hain latJfc night.

Tho Cuirassier gelding John appears to be in strong demand for the Winter Hurdtes, to be run to-morrow. Ho certainly looks exceedingly well. Los Angelos is to leave for Sydney on July 27th.. Genius will also make the trip,, and very probably O’Donnell may take the Boniform —(Juretta colt, for whom the name Bonetta has been claimed.

Quito a number of well-known northern sportsmen will arrive by tho Auckland express this afternoon. Among them are Messrs J. F. llartland (secretary A.R.C.), It. Wynyard (secretary Taka puna J.C.), H. H. liayr (secretary Avondale J.C.J, C. I' 1 . Mark (secretary Auckland Trotting Club), and F. DYonge (secretary Otahuhu Trotting Club). The Auckland Racing Club's programme for next season shows that .£28,915 will be given as stakes, or an average of .C2B2S for each day s racing. Last season the daily average was ,£2170.

The latest candidate for jumping honours is the Birkenhead gelding Dawn, who has been tried over the battens at Ellerslie with fairly satisfactory results. According to the “ Auckland Star,” although no official information is availfable, it is understood that the Auckland Racing Club delegates to the Now land Racing Conference will vote in favour of the stipendiary steward. The G.N. Steeplechase winner, Corazon, is looking exceedingly well at present. The chestnut gelding may possibiy seen out on the second day at Trentuiaiu, but I fancy ColeHo would rather reserve his charge for the National meeting next month.

The French jockey Stern was a richer man after riding bunstar to _ victory in the English Deroy. It is said that Mr Joel gave Mm £2OOO for the mount, and then laid him ASOOO to nothing about winning. Probably the actual amount received by tho rider was much less than these sums, hut no doubt he did well out of the race.
