QUESTION OF LICENSES. Tho licensing of eating-houses was discussed by the City Gounod last evening on a motion by Councillor Fuller: Taut, in the op.nion ot this council, the time has arrived when all restaurants tea moms and otuer eatinghouses shou.d be licensed by the local auihomy, and that a deputation from this council wait upon the (iovernment to urge them to pass the necessary legislation. Councillor Cameron seconded the motion. Councillor Fletcher saw no necessity foi the motion, by which nothing would be gained. The Health Department and. council s officers now had ampie power in regard to the inspection of such prem.ses. Councillor Fitzgerald said if tho corporatiou imagine! that people would be made dean by legislation they were much mistaken. After what had. been disclosed at a previous meeting, he thought all would agree that the establishment of the public Health Department and the appointment of city sanitary inspectors were fully justified. They were doing excellent work. Councillor McLaren regarded tho motion as an unnecessary interference. Councillor Fuller, in reply, claimed that licenses did not harass people. Licenses were tho only safeguard people had. Any place where there was a large congregation of people should bo licensed. The motion was thrown out just before midnight, when there wa-s a bare quorum present.
