PLOUGHING MATCH AT MARTON

A GREAT SUCCESS. BP£CIAL TO THE "TIMES.” MARTON. July 12. After a lap&s of nearly twenty years the Ma-rtou branch of the Farmers’ Union have resuscitated the old-time competition among ploughmen. Yesterday a match was held on ,Mr T. Bredin's property, close to tho borough, ami was attended by about live hundred interested spectators* The entries were highly; satisfactory, and indicate that ploughmen in tho neighbourhood are willing to avail themselves of any opportunity that is presented to enable them to gain further knowledge in this essential work of the farm. The exceptionally wot weatlier that has prevailed during tli-e past week prevented a number of competitors from a distance from being present. Tho day being fine, the outing was thoroughly enjoyed, despite the fact that tho ; ground was wot nnd muddv underfoot, Messrs J. Kortbcott and Balsillie, tho judges, expressed themselves as l>cing well pleased with tho work.. Taken all round, the competitors in class B did capital work considering tho uneven state of tho ground, and considerable difficulty was experienced in making thd first award. An energetic committee had the details in connection with the fixture carefully arranged. and they were very fortunate also in having the services of an old-time South Island champion, in the person of Mr W, V.
