HIGHER PAY WANTED
The majority of the seamen and firemen of the disabled steamer Takapnna, ■which is to be assisted to Port Chalmers by the Oorinna to-day. refused to accept the £2 offered by the Union Company fop the run from Wellington to Port Chalmers, with free trip back. A few of tho men had signed on for £2. when a deadlock ensued. The company’s officials were confronted with a demand for £5 and a free trip back to Wellington. The officials considered the demand as unfair, while the men held that they had tho right to make the beat bargain they could without being unreasonable. Finally tho men were granted £5 and a return trip. Tho Ta.kapuna is not totally disabled, but is'able to proceed slowly under her own steam. It is deemed advisable, however, for the Oorinn-a to help her along In caso of emergency. Tho renr*airs necessitated bv the Takamma’s accident at Westport will be carried out at Port Chalmers.
